Job Description:

Job Summary

Provide technical support in petrophysical evaluation and formation evaluation tasks to deliver accurate reservoir properties and input datasets for reservoir modelling, well planning and production optimisation. Work under supervision to build competency in log interpretation, core analysis integration and data QC.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process, quality‑check and interpret well log data (gamma, resistivity, density, neutron, sonic) to deliver basic lithology, porosity, saturation and net pay evaluations.
  • Support generation and maintenance of petrophysical logs, interpretation workflows and well files for input to static and dynamic models.
  • Integrate core data, cuttings descriptions, mud logs and petrophysical laboratory results to validate and refine log interpretations.
  • Perform basic rock physics tasks and crossplot analyses (porosity vs density, Vshale, water saturation methods) under guidance.
  • Prepare well reports, petrophysical pick lists (tops, fluid contacts, zones), and deliverables for drilling, completion and reservoir teams.
  • Assist in petrophysical model building: facies, porosity and saturation trends, and support upscaling to reservoir models.
  • Participate in wellsite petrophysical support or data acquisition activities when required; manage sample and core data handling.
  • Maintain petrophysical databases, ensure metadata integrity and follow data governance procedures.
  • Contribute to interpretation peer reviews, technical meetings and handovers with geology, reservoir and drilling teams.
  • Learn and apply industry best practices for log interpretation, uncertainty quantification and interpretation workflows; document methodologies and assumptions.
  • Undertake training and competency development; support continuous improvement and implementation of digital tools/automation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Petroleum Engineering, Geophysics or related earth science discipline.
  • 0–2 years’ relevant experience; internships, thesis work or placements in petrophysics or formation evaluation advantageous.

Technical Skills & Knowledge

  • Basic understanding of well logs, petrophysical properties (porosity, permeability, water saturation), and common interpretation methods.
  • Familiarity with petrophysical/log interpretation tools (e.g., Techlog, WellCAD, Petrel) is desirable; willingness to learn industry software.
  • Competence in data analysis and visualization (Excel, basic scripting with Python/MATLAB desirable).
  • Awareness of core analysis, routine lab tests and sample handling procedures.
  • Understanding of borehole conditions, log quality issues and basic environmental corrections.
  • Knowledge of data management principles and version control for subsurface datasets.

Behavioural & Interpersonal Skills

  • Strong analytical and numerical skills with attention to detail and methodical approach.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills to present results to technical teams.
  • Team-oriented, proactive learner with ability to accept feedback and develop technical competence.
  • Ability to prioritise tasks, manage time effectively and work under supervision or independently as required.

Experience & Conditions

  • Willingness to attend wellsite visits and participate in field data acquisition when required; comfortable working in remote locations on occasion.
  • Office environment with potential for extended hours to meet project deadlines or support drilling operations.

Performance Indicators

  • Accuracy and timeliness of petrophysical deliverables (logs, interpretations, well reports).
  • Quality of data QA/QC and adherence to interpretation workflows and data governance.
  • Contribution to integrated subsurface deliverables and usefulness of petrophysical input to reservoir models.
  • Progress against individual competency/training plan and uptake of software/tools.
  • Effective communication and collaboration with geology, reservoir and drilling teams.

Desirable

  • Coursework or projects in petrophysics, formation evaluation, log analysis or rock physics.
  • Familiarity with scripting (Python) and data visualization tools.
  • Short courses or certifications in petrophysical interpretation or industry software.
  • Membership of professional bodies or participation in industry forums (SPE, EAGE).
