Job Purpose

Provide operational guidance on environmental compliance by developing and managing permitting and licensing plans to ensure adherence to national, international, Organization, and industry standards. Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Environmental Management System (EMS) while maintaining strategic relationships with regulatory authorities and key stakeholders to support permitting, ensure compliance, and proactively manage environmental risks.

Principal Accountabilities

  1. Regulatory Compliance & Permitting
  2. Ensure full compliance with Kenyan environmental legislation, petroleum regulations, and constitutional requirements relevant to upstream oil & gas operations.
  3. Develop and maintain a comprehensive legal compliance register and permitting strategy aligned with exploration, drilling, and production activities.
  4. Support the preparation, review, and submission of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), ESIAs and project reports to regulatory authorities, including NEMA.
  5. Environmental Management System (EMS) & Assurance
  6. Implement, and continuously improve the Environmental Management System (EMS) in line with company HSE standards.
  7. Integrate EMS requirements into field operations, contractor management, and project execution.
  8. Conduct environmental audits, inspections, and compliance monitoring across upstream activities and contractor operations.
  9. Lead the investigation, reporting, and close-out of environmental incidents, non-compliances, and audit findings.
  10. Environmental Planning & Risk Management
  11. Identify and manage environmental risks associated with drilling, well testing, production, and logistics operations.
  12. Support emergency preparedness and response activities, particularly for oil spill prevention and mitigation.
  13. Stakeholder Engagement & Social Performance
  14. Build and maintain strong relationships with government agencies, county authorities, NGOs, and community-based organizations.
  15. Support community liaison activities and sustainable development initiatives aligned with company social performance objectives and maintain a social license to operate.
  16. Operational Support & Leadership
  17. Provide environmental advisory support to facilities, drilling, and project oil Kenya teams to ensure compliance and minimize environmental impact.
  18. Promote a proactive environmental culture across employees and contractors through training and awareness programs.
  19. Collaborate with HSE teams to integrate environmental considerations into overall operational risk management.

Qualification

Degree in Environmental Sciences or related field with at least five years’ working experience in environmental related practices, preferably in the oil and gas industry
